December 21, 2012: Why I'm Scared
How did the mayans know that earth would align with the black hole on 12/21/2012?

The Mayans never suggested that the world would end with a bang on December 21, 2012, but rather that that date would be the culmination of several years of events in which the world and mankind was changing.
Modern believers in the prophesy point to the current debate about climate change and global warming as proof positive that the world is indeed heading for the kinds of changes that the Mayans predicted. Even non-believers sometimes use the writings of the 2012 Mayan prophecies and other ancient civilizations to illustrate their case that humans need to take climate change seriously.
First of all, this is not a physical alignment but a visual one as seen from Earth. It is similar to astrologers saying that our Sun is in a certain constellation when this also means as seen from Earth.
The Mayans were great mathematicians and astronomers. Besides agriculture, this was their main pastime. The Mayan priests studied the skies every clear night. They calculated the orbit of Venus. They built their myths and folklore around the Big Dipper and Polaris and the Milky Way. This was a time and era when there were no streetlights or atmospheric pollution. One of their myths concerned the center of the Milky Way. The center is darkened by dust and gasses which creates opaque areas. The Mayans did not know what caused the dark regions but they did notice them. To the Mayans, the 'dark rift' looked like alligator jaws. So it evolved into a 'birthing place' where things were 'born' out of the jaws of the alligator. This is what makes the galactic center special in their mythology. The Sun will APPEAR to rise out of the 'birthing womb' of the alligator's jaws.
It is not difficult to view changes to where the Sun rises and sets on one particular day of the calendar year. It can very easily be accomplished in one man's lifetime. Other civilizations such as the Chinese and the Egyptians had discovered the same phenomenon. Precession. A wobble of Earth's axis caused by torque which completes one wobble every 26,000 years.
All one needs to do is pick a day - any day - and you will see it align the Sun with the galactic center AS SEEN FROM EARTH every 26,000 years. There is nothing special about 12/21.
AS SEEN FROM THE SUN, Earth alligns with the galactic center twice every year!
So the Mayans simply picked a day. No-one is sure why they chose the December solstice. But that's the day that the Sun begins its return to the northern hemisphere.... What day would you pick?
Our Sun is currently 50 light years ABOVE the galactic center and is continuing northwards NOT southwards. It WILL NOT physically allign itself with the galactic center nor the black hole in the next 3 years.
Persons who hype this hoax as a physical allignment are intentionally creating disinformation either to sell books or to get their 15 minutes of doomsday fame.
This was NEVER hyped as a doomsday by the Mayans. Nor did the Mayans ever state that this was anything more than a visual phenomenon only. You have been caught up in disinformation when you state that the Mayans made "predictions" for this event. No such predictions were ever made and the Mayans NEVER spoke of climate change. It is sad and unfortunate that if one searches long enough, one can find fraudulent claims being made by persons of Mayan heritage who are alive today attempting to gain some fame from this. They disgrace their forefathers.
For the original Mesoamericans, it would have been a joyous celebration during a year when Kulkulkan slithers down Chichen-Itza pyramid in the spring.
Yes, the Mayans were aware of cycles. All modern man needs to do is research Milankovitch cycles to find that cycles do exist. But don't allow this fact to mislead you by claims of present day false prophets attempting to make this something it was never intended to be.
This is an astronomical event for one day picked out of the calendar. That's all it was ever intended to be. Anything and everything else comes from New Age cultists and armegeddon freaks who are living in YOUR culture TODAY - not the Mayans who were victims of Spaniard Christianity in 1521.
