What are some scientific theories surrounding 2012? (SERIOUS answers only please)?
Many people believe December 21, 2012 will be the end of the world, and many people believe so for many different reasons. Some people have already quit their jobs because they have enough $ in savings to last them thru 12/21/12.
What are some actual scientific theories that support the belief concerning the end of days or a major catastrophic event in 2012? (Exluding Mayan or ancient myths)
There are exactly no scientific theories or facts backing up the supposed big events for 21 December 2012. The only thing that will happen is the solstice, and that happens twice every year.
There is not a sane informed adult on this planet, scientist or not, who gives this material any credence at all. It is entirely delusion and lies.
There are two fact that are usually trotted out, both of which are irrelevant. The first is the fact that the Mayan long count of days reaches a "round" number then. Completely meaningless, the Mayans made no prophecy of doom and who would give a tuppenny damn if they did? There have been hundreds of such prophecies, see the "abhota" site. .
The other is that sunrise on that day will more or less match up with some feature in space, according to John Major Jenkins. However it has been doing that for the best past of 50 years and will keep on doing it for the best part of another 50 years. The closest match was actually in 1998. Nobody noticed anything. This also has no meaning since it is merely astrology, an entirely discredited system of guesswork. See the "2012hoax" site.

What Could Happen In 2012! (Different Theories)
What is your opinion on the 2012 doomsday theories? What do you thinks is going to happen?
I don't believe the world will end, but I do think society isn't going to hold up well during that time of 2012. I personally thinks there's going to be riots and crazy stories of suicide and other things along those lines because people will get scared and lose their ability to think straight. What do you think?
I don't think enough people believe in this crud for it to have any effect at all. Many of the middle school types who have been asking the 32,000 questions about it on Y!A for the past 2 plus years will have grown out of it by then but will still be teenagers.
If there are suicides I hope to see certain people prosecuted, notably Nancy Lieder. We might see how well her story holds up in court as she is being cross examined. If that happens she'll end up in prison or under medication, maybe a mental hospital. It would do no harm if someone has a crack at the History Channel in the courts either. To hell with them.
I do not personally know any adult who believes this bunk, though many have heard of it. It is adults who run the world, not teenagers. There are a couple of apparent adults on Y!A who seem to believe it but they are two in hundreds. I know where one of them lives from his IP address recorded on another site and it is not at a nerve centre of civilisation.
So I would not worry too much.
