why is 2012 the end of the world

Why 2012 end of the world?
Why do people think 2012 is the end of the world? What's the evidence? I heard the exact date is December 21, 2012? If it is then I AM TOO YOUNG TO DIE! I will be 15 by then.:[ Also does that mean that 2012 IS the year the world will end? Or is it a prediction?
The world isn’t going to end in 2012. The claims that scientists are predicting doomsday in 2012 are lies. There were no ancient prophecies concerning 2012 until 2003. Only crackpots and charlatans, who didn’t bother to take any science classes, are predicting disaster in 2012. The whole thing started out with unqualified people (Jose Arguelles and Zecharia Sitchen) misinterpreting the Mayan calendar (it doesn’t end, it merely recycles) and ancient Sumerian writings about the planet Jupiter. Then a woman named Nancy Lieder, who thinks she hears messages from aliens in her head decided to hijack Sitchen's imaginary planet for her alien fantasies. She said this planet would return in 2003. When it failed to show up, she just changed her doomsday to 2012 to agree with Arguelles misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar. It has been all downhill from there. People keep tacking on new fantasies, none of which have a shred of scientific validity.
They make up new scenarios of doom faster than scientists can debunk them, and they actually claim that scientists are saying these things. No scientist is claiming any doomsday scenario for 2012. Also, all the claims of prophecies for 2012 are false. No one predicted it before this bunch of scam artists started it to make money. They just throw in some scientific sounding terms, slam them together into a mishmash of meaningless prattle and figure if they can't dazzle you with brilliance, they will baffle you with bullsh!t. Don't be fooled by that.
Unfortunately, the History Channel, which used to be a reputable information source, gave up their credibility for better ratings and jumped on the 2012 bandwagon. Too many kids believe everything they see on the internet and are unable to discern a reputable scientific website from a crackpot one.
This whole pile of garbage just keeps growing. Don't worry about it. It is just people making money off books, advertising, "survival kits", and whatever else they can dream up to sell.
I found a really good website that covers all the various claims about 2012 and about the charlatans who are promoting it. Go to it and read about the things that have you concerned. They give sources for their information and they aren't selling anything.

why do people believe the world will end in 2012?
i do not believe it will and i have sound facts to back it but i want to know why people do believe that the end of the world is 12-21-2012 at 11:11 gmt.
They have been lied to by a disorganised group of frauds and crazies.
1. The Mayan count of days runs out of numbers, that's about the only fact. It means nothing.
2. The Mayans made no predictions about anything, except for seasons, solstices, full moons and eclipses, pretty much like we do, this sort of thing is fairly easy to do if you keep records and can do straight forward arithmetic.
3. The prediction that something big would happen in 2012 was published about 1987 by a man called Jose Arguelles, he is a former LSD user, an astrologer and has claimed to be the re-incarnation of a Mayan priest among many other peculiar things. He is obsessed with time and has demanded that the present calendar system be changed since it damages the environment. Don't ask me how, I don't understand that at all.
4. Since then a lot of other peculiar people and frauds have jumped on his bandwagon including the late Terence McKenna who "predicted" the future by taking drugs, by tossing coins and consulting the I Ching, the Chinese book of changes which was a sort of system for personal fortune telling.
5. Some say that the planets will line up. They won't and they can't. It would not mean anything if they did. Back about 1958 a lot of the planets did almost line up and nobody noticed anything.
6. Some talk about galactic alignments of this or that. Most of these are not true, and the only one that is nearly right was closest in 1998. Nobody noticed anything. This does not worry John Major Jenkins, the man behind it though. But I don't think he says the world is going to end either.
7. Planets X and Nibiru are invisible, have no size, have no mass and Nibiru can pass through the inner solar system repeatedly without affecting anything or being affected. If they were to be here in 2012 they would be among the four or five brightest objects in the night sky including the Moon. Nobody anywhere in the entire world can see anything. In other words, they don't exist.
Planet X was invented by Nancy Lieder who claimed she was told about it by aliens who abducted her and now hears voices in her head.
Nibiru was cooked up by Zecharia Sitchin who invented it to sell books about aliens invading the Earth in ancient times and creating humans as slaves. He said it won't be back till after 2085. This must the the first time in history that a fake planet has been stolen.
8. There will be no pole shifts. Nancy Lieder claimed that planet X would cause a magnetic pole shift in 2003, but since it didn't happen she postponed planet X to 2012 to fit in with Arguelles ideas. Other people have invented solar flares and other things so they can have a pole shift. Solar flares cannot cause a magnetic pole shift on Earth, their magnetic fields are too weak by large factors.
9. Other predictions about the Sun are false or wrong. The next peak in solar activity is expected in early - middle of 2013, not 2012 and the latest measurements show that the expected peak will be about average or even lower than average. Peaks in solar activity happen every 11 years. The worst that happens is that powers supplies can be cut in a few places for a few hours and some radio communications are disrupted.
10. Despite what some people say, there are no predictions about 2012 in the Bible, Nostradamus or any other old books, or by any culture at all, ancient or modern. There was no prediction of 9/11 anywhere. These are straight lies.
11. There is no force that can cause a sudden shift in the geographic poles.
12. There are no known large asteroids or comets that are likely to hit the Earth in 2012.
13 The Institute for Human Continuity is owned by Sony pictures and is intended to promote the movie '2012'. It has no actual reality. The 2012 movie is based on Nancy Lieder's failed 2003 predictions.
14. The whole thing is either crazies raving or some others trying to make a few dollars by frightening some people into buying worthless junk or selling garbage shows to unscrupulous TV networks.
15. Everyone did not say we'd be in big trouble in 1999 - 2000 and they don't say it now either. Almost all of the people worried about this are under 16. They do not have the critical sense, the education or the experience to see this for the nonsense that it is.
16. None of this has anything to do with global warming or the ozone layer. This stuff is anti-science, but global warming and the thinning of the ozone layer are soundly based on real science with real measurements.
