In a survival situation, what are the longest lasting foods you might suggest storing up "just in case" ?
I'm wondering, as i'm assume others might have pondered this question as well, what foods would be good to store up, that can last long periods of time without any form of refrigeration. For people that live in disaster prone areas for example. If I had good reason to believe a major disaster was going to hit, what foods would some of you suggest storing up if any, that would last months if not years, and not have any special upkeep requirements.
Whole grains are your best bet. I keep a couple of sealed 5 gallon buckets of wheat. Rice will work also. They find grains at archaeological sites that are thousands of years old. Properly stored they will be ok for your grandchildren. And if you don't eat it, you can always plant it or use it to attract deer.
Canned goods are only good for about 18 months.
Salt cured meat and fish can last for extended periods (2 to 3 years).
Dehydrated fruit is good for about 18 months.
I'm not a fan of beans, but they will store for up to 5 years.

do you know what a disaster kit is made of and how do i create one and a survival kit after a tornadoes?
Im doing it for my science project i think that when you do a survival kit you need food and water and a first aid kit to last you for about 1 to 2 months for a disaster kit i have no idea and thanks
