Why do people think that the world is going to catastrophically end in 2012?
Nothing happened at midnight on january 31st 1999 (Y2K) The Aztecs theorized that there were about 7 "eras" since the beginning of time, and December 21st 2012, to them, is the end of this era and beginning of the next. Nostradamus, as he always did, made his predictions extremely vague. And with him, believers will see in his quatrains, what they WANT to see. He simlpy stated that something sugnificant would happen on that date. Stop reading too much into this, and you believers are going to feel and look foolish on december 22nd 2012, just like all the believers of Y2K felt on january 1st.
and the aztecs. and lesser popularized by the media, the romans, and the egyptians and the myans. all predicted this. and i meant nothing happened on december 31st 1999, not jan.
The world won't end on 2012. The media (History Channel) likes to put fear into your minds. Fear is the number one controller and they are using it make you go see the movie which will make them millions.
Nostradamus has made many predictions that haven't come true, and mostly incorrect.
The Mayan's calender still continues way farther than 2012, the Mayans themselves do not believe that the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012.
Any "scientist" that claims that the world will end on 2012 is not a real scientist. They are people that are willing to sell books, and videos for this hoax.

I think you shouldn't paint everyone with the same brush. I certainly don't believe the end of the world will occur in 2012, but I do believe man is affecting the climate. And I resent being referred to as a "warmer." I do not believe in AGW because I want to, I believe it because that's what the current understanding of the issue points to by people a lot more intelligent in the filed of study than you or I. Could scientists be wrong, sure. You can never be faulted for doing something when it's based on the current understanding, but if we do nothing and find you're wrong…there is the sin.
