Do you really think the world will end on 2012?
I think it's all BS. Their blowing Nostradamus predictions way out of proportion.
I do not know of any credible scientist who has made the claim that the world will end on December 21, 2012. The sources which predict that the world will end on that date are typical of adventists who have predicted the end of the world of eons and always come to be disappointed when the event did not happen. In some cases, they changed their story, but in most cases, they simply grew very, very quiet.
The basis for the claim is a recently discovered ancient calendar attributed to the Mayans. It is generally believed that the Calendar would start over and does not signal the end of the world, much as our current calendar resets (starts over) each December 31st.
The speculation is further drawn into question when one starts to question how _our_ calendar date of 12/21/2012 was determined to coincide with the end of _their_ calendar, since we share no common history with the ancient people of the Americas.

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc. in Crystal River, Florida. To render December 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."
