Can clorox be useful in a first aid kit?
For example, if you get a minor cut on a camping trip, and it becomes infected, can clorox be used as first aid in the wilderness, to keep it from getting worse till you can get medical attention? If so, what are the side effects? Would it be painful? What other first aid products would do a better job with less side effects?
Are you serious?
1) Should you use it? Absolutely not, it contains sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite, very powerful bases.
2) Side effects? It's highly corrosive and will irritate and chemical burn your skin and open wound. It can also burn your lungs if inhaled.
3) Painful? Yes, but not as painful as the ridicule you'd face from others.
4) Alternatives: Carry a bottle of hydrogen peroxide or alcohol wipes. They're MUCH lighter and easier to pack, and unlike Clorox, are actually clinically effective. Personal preference goes to alcohol wipes. They're the lightest and easiest to pack, and hydrogen peroxide may oxidize (corrode) your skin.
