end of the world doomsday How should the world end?
I have a doomsday project for english and I have to come up with a somewhat plausible way the world could end as we know it, with most of the population dying off, and the rest of us having to create a new type of society, to cope with the new world. But there are alot of ways, wars, politics, the world itself through global warming, volcanoes, ect. I would like to do something natural with the planet changing, but im not sure what or how. If you got any ideas feel free to share
If you're into fad science, try "global warming", sort of like "Day After Tomorrow" (DAT), the speed of events in that film were very (Very!) much fiction.
Or... 20 years ago, we were worrying about "The Coming Ice Age", because the global temperature trend back then was all negative, despite the greenhouse effects of carbon dioxide. That would be much slower and very much less dramatic than DAT, but it would destroy the value of drastic areas of real estate, and would it leave sufficient tillable land to feed the existing world population?
Then... there is the ever worrisome "pandemic", pick your favorite recent topic, AIDS, SARS, MRSA, Bird Flu, the resurgence of Small Pox... Read up on the events of the Plague in Europe during the middle ages, or watch some Monty Python. You could assume a heretofore unknown and untreatable pathogen resulting from a genetic engineering experiment gone awry.
How about an asteroid striking the earth, such as in "Deep Impact", naturally this could be the cause of sudden global cooling, resulting in a global ice-age, etc. etc.
In the 60s we all thought it was going to be WW-III, global massive nuclear conflict, a.k.a. MAD, Mutual Assured Destruction. We probably had the equipment to do it, and will never know how close we came.
Then... there is the (very distant) eventuality of our sun becoming a Super-Nova, and enveloping the earth suddenly.
How about threats from outside, like "War of the Worlds" or "Independence Day". These are somewhat low on plausibility.
The Mayans famously predicted that the end of the world will come about on 21st December 2012. Some believe this date signifies doomsday, others believe this date represents a time of transition from one world age into another...
